FAQ

Ordering

How do I order a translation?

Choose a service, select the unit, language pair and tier that matches your job, add it to your cart, and check out — no account needed.

Can I order without creating an account?

Yes — checkout only asks for the contact and order details needed to deliver your translation; there's no account system on this site.

What file formats can I send?

PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint cover most orders; scanned images work for certified/notarised documents; see How it works or the relevant service page for the full list.

Can I change or cancel an order after I've placed it?

Free cancellation until work starts. Once a translator has been assigned, cancelling within 24 hours of placing the order is charged at 50% of the order value; work already delivered isn't refundable. See Refunds & right of withdrawal for full detail.

Do you translate for businesses as well as individuals?

Yes — select "Business" at checkout to add your organisation number for correct invoicing and MVA treatment.

What if I'm not sure which service I need?

Read the certification explainer if it's a personal document for an authority, browse Services, or use the price estimator — all three help you land on the right page before you order.

Certification

What's the difference between certified, notarised and apostilled?

Certified means a signed statement of accurate translation. Notarised adds a notary's confirmation of the translator's signature. Apostilled adds a further certificate for use in another Hague Convention country. Read the full explainer for the complete picture.

What is a statsautorisert translatør?

A government-authorised translator — a protected Norwegian credential. Where a receiving authority's requirements call for one, we route your order to a statsautorisert translatør for that language pair.

Will my certified translation be accepted by UDI / Skatteetaten / [authority]?

We format the translation to that authority's stated requirements as we understand them. No translation provider can guarantee a third party's acceptance decision.

Do I need an apostille or just notarisation?

It depends on the receiving country and institution — see the comparison table on the certification explainer, or ask us before ordering.

Can any document be certified?

Most personal and business documents can be certified. If yours is unusual, contact us before ordering and we'll confirm.

How is a certified translation delivered — digital or paper?

Digital PDF by default, free. Add a stamped hard copy at checkout (NOK 129 Norway / NOK 349 international) if the receiving authority needs a physical original.

Pricing

Are your prices final, or can they change?

The price shown for a standard order is what you pay. It changes only with surcharges you actively choose (express, weekend delivery) or select conditions (Group B language, poor-quality source) — always shown before you check out.

What counts as a "standard page"?

1,800 characters, roughly 250 words — the unit certified translation is priced by.

Why do some languages cost more?

Group B languages (×1.25) reflect genuinely lower availability of qualified specialist translators for those pairs in the Norwegian market — see Languages for the full band list.

What's the minimum order?

NOK 690. Orders below that get a top-up line to reach the minimum, shown clearly in your cart.

What surcharges might apply?

Express (+40%), weekend/holiday delivery (+25%), and poor-quality or non-editable source files (+15%) — all shown openly before you check out, never added afterwards.

Do your prices include VAT (MVA)?

Yes — every price shown includes 25% Norwegian MVA. Checkout breaks the MVA component out as its own line.

Delivery

How long does a translation take?

It depends on the service — most document translation is 2–3 working days standard; see the turnaround chip on each service page or the full rate card on Pricing.

Can I get my translation faster?

Choose express at checkout for most services — a +40% surcharge for next-working-day delivery, shown as its own price on each service page.

Do you deliver on weekends?

Yes, with a +25% weekend/holiday surcharge, selectable at checkout.

Can I get a stamped hard copy posted to me?

Yes — NOK 129 within Norway, NOK 349 internationally, selectable at checkout. Digital PDF delivery is free and is the default.

What if my source document is a poor-quality scan?

A +15% surcharge applies to poor-quality or non-editable source files, shown openly — we'd rather flag it than guess at unclear text.

Privacy

How do you handle confidential documents?

Files are seen only by the translator and independent reviewer assigned to your order, and are kept no longer than needed to deliver and support it.

Do you sign NDAs?

Yes, on request and at no extra charge — ask when you place your order, particularly for legal, medical or financial matters.

What happens to my data after the order is complete?

It's retained only as long as necessary for delivery, support and our legal/accounting obligations, then deleted — see Privacy for exact retention periods.

Do you use cookies or tracking?

Necessary cookies run the site (cart, language, consent choice) with no consent needed; Google Analytics 4 loads only if you explicitly accept it — see Cookies.

Who can I contact about my personal data?

support@thompsontranslations.com, or the same address using the privacy@ alias — see Privacy for your full rights under GDPR.
